It provides a lot of value for the money in spite of its quirks and I have enjoyed using the tech after I got it all setup. The two signal paths and arbitrary 'DSP limits' make no sense in the plugin context. It is scalable but I cannot read sh*t because the text doesn't scale. If you just approach it as a new guitar all-in-one it is pretty hard to use at first. It really only makes sense if you are familiar with the hardware and how it works in advance. For all the tooting about the hardware UI of the Helix hardware here, the UI on Native when considered on its own is wretched and unintuitive, in general. The interface for Pod Farm in general and Elements/FX in particular is much better than Native too. It is the hardest plugin I have ever used to get the input setup just right. I do not have to instantiate the entire framework to get a delay or modulation from it in my signal path to use.Īs for other things, as you note, Native is kind of ridiculous to dial in as a plugin. So I found it finicky.īut honestly the BEST thing about PF and the thing that makes it still occasionally useful for me even today, and would just be amazing for Helix Native is the 'Pod Farm Elements' I love have a plugin for each class of effect in the suite. For the XT I always used a bunch of EQ shaping and with the PF plug, I always used IRs though. It was pretty sweet with impulses and some EQ back in the day and was probably my fave modeling platform before I went to the AxeFx Gen1 and moved on.

I've been a big advocate of Pod Farm/XT in the past. The Helix model may be more accurate in spite of being a pretty uninspiring model (IMHO). OP: To be fair, the Uber on the XT may have been the coolest model and I have a feeling it sounds nothing like a Bogner. In the end the Helix DID sound better, it cleans better with your volume and it's not as fizzy as Pod Farm (which can be sorted with an High shelf filter with a common Eq plugin) but the point of this is I spent almost a day chasing a Pod Farm preset I literally had in 10 minutes. All my effort with the SM57 positions was just a waste of time and I found the 409 mic to be the closest to the tone in Pod Farm. I didnt want to use third party IRs so I use the stock Greenback cab which doesnt have the off axis 57 option of course. Gain staging was really hard to optimize and I found that Master, Bias and Bias X control can really mess with your tones. I also had to use the minotaur pedal as clean boost to get the same level of tightness of Pod Farm. Gain 4, Bass 5, Mid 6 (mid control has really a very specific behaviour in the helix uber), Treble 2.5, Presence 4, Volume 7.5, Master 5, Sag 0, Ripple 0. I tried again this late afternoon and finally I found a tone very very close to the one in Amp Farm. I simply couldnt get the tone and most importantly the feel (which is of course a high gain compressed tone) out of the helix. I like the XT model more and I sold my XT thinking it was a piece of crap years ago! I tweaked the thing for more than a hour before giving up. Helix amps are really different than the XT models. Sound was not so tight as with Amp Farm, bass was really flabby and gain was clearly really low. When I set the Helix German Ubersonic amp with these settings it sounded very different, and somehow worse. Greenback cab with SM57 off axis, 5% air. Gain 14, Bass 30, Mid 25, Treble 25, Presence 60, Master 100. I was excited since you know, how fun can it be to find a tone you love and have it better than before right? Settings on Pod Farm were as follows: Later today I wanted to replicate this preset on my main DAW with Helix and Audient interface. Ok, so follow me, I plugged into guitarport, installed Pod Farm, selected a preset and then two tweaks. It's not like it was the best tone ever but it was one of those moments when the sound inspires you and riffs come out easily.

After some tweaks (less gain and switched to Greenback cab with sm57 off axis) I loved the sound I was hearing. Anyway, while browsing some presets I found a couple that were very nice to me, one based on a VHish Lead Plexi 100 tone and the another one called "Alice" obviously based on Cantrell's tone. Curious thing is I used to be a Pod XT user for several years but I find both Gearbox and Pod Farm less fizzy than my old Pod. Now while I was at it I installed Pod Farm 1 for the first time (since then I used Gearbox with guitar port) and man I did enjoy playing with it. This morning I had to keep an eye on my 1yo baby, so I took my old laptop with me in the living room and plugd into my good old guitarport to jam a little bit. Ok this is somehow long, but I'll try to keep it as short as possible.
